Carnival in the City….

Hello Laborday Carnival is right around the corner and I am very excited. Mas camps are getting ready putting their final touch on the costumes,Mas players are working out so that their costumes can look appealing on their bodies, Carnival vendors and street entrepeneurs looking for ways to maximize their profits and the Mas lovers are counting down the weeks and days to this big event.Kaios International and Ramajay mas are two of the bigger mas bands in the parade and can be seen on facebook holding events to attract masqueraders to their camps. The excitement of Laborday is in the air and I will be their and you should too.
Carnival in New York is a special time of the year for people of West Indian origin,I am no exception. Every year I look forward to Labor Day Carnival weekend to display my flag and show my Caribbean pride.I even went as far as to dye my hair in my national colors the week leading up to Labor Day weekend.
Millions of New Yorkers commute to Eatern Parkway between Utica avenue and Washington avenue (Brooklyn Museum) to experience this joyous celebration of unity and Pride. The streets of Brooklyn is turn into one gigantic block party filled with West indian flavors and African beats.
The sound of the Reggae dance hall trucks entangled with the sweet soca ridim is unified in somewhat of a 69 sexual act. The waist line of the sweet smelling Caribbean woman and the thunderous gyrating of the West indian men becomes a scene taken from the Sodom and gomorah story.
Your senses is tickled with the aroma of indian herbs and spices which has been embeded in the Caribbean cuisine for the past 400 years. Its like entering the garden of eden before that biblical story was contaminated with men superstitions and hallucinations. The temptation to purchase food on Eastern Parkway during the West Indian Carnival rivals any drug addiction known to men…
Oh its a lovely place to be on Labor Day and for the past 25 years I haven’t missed not even one carnival yet..what a ongoing strict.
